Soft Cat describes their sound as Reggae / Reggaeton / Regional Mexican and uses Myspace as their primary outlet for exposure. Nonetheless, this is an absolutely beautiful band. Their genre on the more reasonable Facebook profile is aptly listed as "sincerity".
The titles of their songs are verbally pleasing as well as true to the lyrics. The complete list on their Myspace includes “Silver Babies Sun”, “It Won’t Be Long”, “Dark When It Should Be Violet Hour”, and “Black Bird”. I won’t take the liberty of deciding what each song is about because these lyrics are too good to misrepresent, but the titles appear totally accurate to my understandings of the songs. Even the band’s name draws a visually appropriate correlation to the music.
“Dark When It Should Be Violet Hour” begins with just an acoustic guitar. A lead guitar and kick drum come in after a few measures of chords. This band does an excellent job of establishing a mood or feeling before beginning the lyrics. The setup is in some cases the most important part of the song. Once the lyrics to this song come in, contemplating on the only direct relation of this song’s purpose, the title, you already have a sense of longing for another time. The lyrics describe this feeling so accurately. After a couple minutes, a banjo comes into the mix strongly and lighten the mood.
I get the feeling that these guys have a great outlook on life. Bands like Soft Cat are usually full of the coolest people to hang out with. Excellent music begets excellent times.
